You first introduced me to alternative medicine, did you know that? I remember sitting at the breakfast table when I was young seeing you down nearly a whole handful of herbal supplements, vitamins, and that apple cider vinegar. I could never figure out who you downed that without so much as a face. Health was important to you, as was doing things the old-fashioned and natural way. I may not have realized it at the time, but I like to think I got that from you.
Nothing ever seemed to get you down, there was always work to be done and you enjoyed doing it. Not a single person that knew you could say you were not a hard-working man, that’s for sure. In fact, we always said that the day you slowed down would be the day that you died, and sadly that day came all too soon.
Grandma passed on a lot of your books to me when I started studying complementary and alternative medicine in school. I could not believe the collection you had accumulated over the years, and it was a treasure to receive them. There were books on nutrition, herbal medicine, alternative therapies, reflexology, the mind-body connection, and so much more. Flipping through their pages made me feel closer to you, a connection I feel each time I reference one of them, which I often do.
I wish I would have started on this path while you were still here. I can imagine us sitting out on the swing, or maybe by the pond, like we did sometimes when I was little. I imagine we would talk a lot about our health and different therapies that we have tried or that interested us. I am quite positive you would have taught me a thing or two. In fact you still do, my memories of you remind me often to work hard, to take care of myself and my loved ones, to appreciate nature, and to enjoy life. Until we meet again…
I was also inspired to create this diffuser blend containing wild orange, cedarwood, rosemary, and spearmint in his memory. Wild orange because he absolutely loved oranges, in fact he would give everyone in the family a box every Christmas. Cedarwood because he was a very talented wood-smith. Rosemary and spearmint because he loved herbs and all kinds of plants, I remember him showing me how to identify all kinds of wild plants when I was little.
