I recently had the opportunity, through the United Aromatherapy Effort Inc., to put together an aromatic care package for donation to the Florida Parkland Student Relief.
They were looking for aromatherapy products to support the students, teachers, and families affected by the recent school shooting. Since I find personal inhalers to be the best application for emotional support I decided I was going to donate 50 of them to the cause. However, I had not previously blended for grief/loss before…so I was left clueless as to what to send! I had to dig through my notebooks for inspiration…compiling the following list of essential oils associated with grief and loss (please keep in mind that this is by no means a comprehensive list).
Grief is an emotion that is so very personal and one that people deal with in their own ways. I had a great discussion with one of my fellow aromatherapists on this in light of the current project. What is comforting to one individual may not be to another. For example, I find comfort in light citrus and floral aromas while they find the conifers to be most comforting. For this reason I wanted to create two different blends in hopes that more recipients would be able to find relief in one of them.
“Solace” is more my style, floral and bright. A comforting blend of sweet orange, lavender, and rhododendron.
“Grief” is more fresh and herbal, slightly coniferous. A blend of bergamot, sweet marjoram, and cypress. And guess what…I found I really quite liked it!
In addition to the aromatherapy inhalers I sent, I also filled several lavender sachets (the previously mentioned colleague’s idea!) to send along as well. I loved this idea. I personally carry a lavender sachet keychain on me that can be incredibly soothing to lightly squeeze or hold and get a whiff of that fresh lavender aroma.
